Welcome to Great Bay!
Quick Start Information for Newly Accepted Students
You should have already received or will soon receive an email from Admissions with your next steps. Refer to this email to determine your placement status.
Ready for Advising and Registration?
If the email directs you to make an appointment for advising and course registration, that’s great! That means you’ve met all course placement requirements through Accuplacer assessment, self-guided placement, or waivers, or it’s not applicable for your academic program. To set up an appointment, please contact the Advising & Transfer Center – [email protected] or (603) 427-7728.
Need Course Placement?
If the email directs you to complete course placement in one or more areas (Reading, Writing, Math or Computer Skills), please complete the following steps as applicable to get you ready for advising and registration.
Great Bay Community College uses multiple methods to place newly accepted students in Reading, Writing, Math, and in some cases Computer Skills, before advising and course registration. We do this to help ensure your success in these subject areas. Placement can be determined in multiple ways:
- Certain high school English, Math, and computer coursework: If you haven’t done so already, send Admissions a copy of your high school transcript or HiSET score report. Transcripts should be sent to [email protected].
- SAT scores (7 years old or newer): If in high school, ask your school counselor if they can send scores over along with a transcript. Otherwise, you can log into your College Board account and download your own score report. At the top of the page, there’s a link in a blue box to “Download Your Score Report.” This will download a PDF document which you can then email to us.
- Previous college coursework, including Advanced Placement (AP) exams: If you haven’t done so already, send Admissions your college transcript(s) and we’ll evaluate for placement waivers. We don’t need transcripts for coursework taken at colleges within the Community College System of NH.
- NEW! A fast and convenient Self-Guided Placement is available for Reading, Writing and Math. Great Bay uses a self-guided placement survey to help students select the most appropriate entry-level courses in English and Math. These surveys are designed to promote student success by aligning course placement with academic preparation. Here’s what you need to do:
- Go to the Self-Guided Placement for English and/or Self-Guided Placement for Math, as applicable.
- Enter your name and Student ID (check your post-accept welcome email from Admissions).
- Complete the placement survey.
- After submittal, our staff will review and provide your English and/or Math class placement. You still have the option to take the Accuplacer if you want an objective assessment of your Reading, Writing or Math Skills.
- If you’re looking to place into a more advanced college math class beyond Quantitative Reasoning or College Algebra (Discrete Math through Calculus), you can take this Self-Guided Placement for Math (170 and above).
- If your program requires Computer Skills Placement, you have the option to do this yourself and send the link to “Your Results” you receive for each of these four tests to the Center for Academic Planning and Support at [email protected].
- Business Administration AS, Accounting AS only:
- All other programs that require Computer Skills placement
- Basic Computer Skills
- Internet Basics
- Using Email
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 or Mac OS (pick whichever one you are most comfortable with)
- If we’re not able to place you using the criteria above, you can be placed using the Accuplacer assessment. It’s free and can be completed on-campus or remotely.
